Chores

Although they are small tasks, the chores are an integral part of keeping the labs and libraries clean and running efficiently. The Managers monitor chore completion as it will be used to positively or negatively affect your overall performance. The chores are divided into two main categories: Daily Chores and Weekly Chores.

Completion of each task must be recorded on LTweb. Chore assignments can be found on a Google Sheet toward the bottom of the Lab pages. Consultants should check off their chores once completed.

In general, there is enough time during one’s shift to complete the required chores in time. However, there are circumstances that make this difficult, such as a full class being in the lab. Or perhaps all the library workstations are in use for the entire duration of one’s shift. If this is the case, please do your best to complete as many of your chores as possible and please leave a note on the corresponding chores Google Sheet.

Daily Chores

These chores are completed once everyday by the opening and closing consultants.

Opening Chores:

TaskSummary
Verify Supply CountMake sure that the amount of supplies in the cabinet match the supply log.
Check Whiteboards (labs only)Make sure that whiteboards were cleaned from the night prior. If not cleaned, please do so and direct message (DM) a manager on Slack.
Projector Control Panel Check (BE105/109 only, M-F)Unlock projector panel by unlocking combo lock and sliding panel out.

Verify Supply Count:

Check the amount of supplies in the consultant cabinets (some labs have multiple cabinets) against the supply count on the Consultant website on the corresponding lab page. There is a half sheet guide in each consultant cabinet to remind you how to count and decrement each supply.

Check Whiteboards (labs only):

Ensure that the whiteboards have been cleaned since the night before. If they are not please clean them and communicate this to the managers via consmgr@ucsc.edu.

Closing Chores:

TaskSummary
Lock Projector Panel(BE 105/109 only)Put lid on the projector panel and secure lock to the panel.
Clean WhiteboardsUse Expo spray and paper towels from the consultant cabinet to clean boards. Check and replace any dried-out markers.
Set lab alarm(All labs except BE 109/105)Arm the lab when closing a lab for the night.

Closing Consultants (Monday-Friday only)
Please be aware that some labs will be unstaffed when you arrive for your shift. It is very important to diligently scan the lab for damaged equipment, vandalism, or missing items. If any of the above is discovered, please submit a Technical Support Request immediately. Remember to include important information such as the item, its location, and the extent of the damage.

Clean Whiteboards (labs only):

Wipe off the whiteboards using the provided Expo spray and paper towels in the consultant cabinet. Clean the whiteboard trays. Replace the Expo pens if necessary.

Chair Checking: (Labs only, Mon-Fri):

Check that each workstation has a chair. Report any chairs missing as a facilities request once you have checked around the lab for the chair(s).

Monday (Sunday for BE 105): Clean Keyboards & Mice (All labs)

Go around to each station and clean the keyboard and mouse using disinfectant the wipes. Wipe the entire surface of the mouse including the bottom. Also be sure to clean the mouse cord. For the keyboards, turn it upside down and shake it a couple of times into a trashcan or onto the desk and clean up with a disinfectant wipe. Debris should not be on the desks, chairs, or floor. Also, if the keys look particularly dirty please wipe them down using the disinfectant wipes.

Tuesday: Clean Tables

Go around to every desk in the lab and clean them using the disinfectant wipes. Remove any pencil marks, strange spots, and anything else that the wipes are able to lift.

Wednesday: Clean Computer Equipment/Cases

Go around to each computer and, using disinfectant wipes, wipe down everything except for the monitor screens. For some computers this will mean wiping down the actual computer and monitor case, whereas with some Macs, this will just mean wiping down the monitor case, as the computer is inside.

Thursday: Tidy Up Consultant Cabinet

Organize the Consultant cabinets (some labs have multiple cabinets) and pay particular attention to the Lost & Found, Headphone checkout sheets, etc.

Thursday: Monitor Cleaning  (Social Sciences 1 Mac lab Only)

Clean all of the computer monitors by completing the following steps:

  • Turn off the monitor. This will allow you to see fingerprints and other grime with greater ease.
  • Dampen the cloth lightly with water from the spray bottle then wipe/clean the monitor screen. Use a circular motion, which is best for eliminating streaks, and apply only light pressure.
  • If the rag becomes too dirty to use, please throw it away.
  • If this bag is empty or you need additional rags, please post a Facilities Support Request.
  • If the water from the spray bottle runs out, then refill the bottle by visiting one of the water locations described in the box below. Note: Do NOT use disinfectant wipes to clean monitor screens. Water can be found in the following locations:
LabWater Location
Porter ArtsBathroom across lab, on opposite side of building.1 bathroom on each floor level.
BE109Bathroom in the hall outside of the lab.
Rachel  Carson  CollegeBathroom in the academic building next door or in the coffee shop.
Cowell ApartmentsBathroom in quarry plaza, or the redwood center (by the bike coop)
Ming OngBathroom inside the lab.
Social  Sciences 1Bathroom down the hall in the Soc Sci building.
McHenry Library Bathroom located on the second floor just past Dead Central.
Science and Engineering LibraryBathroom located near the front of the building on the right side, past the reference monographs.

Friday: Monitor Cleaning & Check Labels (All labs EXCEPT Social Sciences 1 MAC lab)

Clean all of the computer monitors by completing the steps listed under the Thursday monitor cleaning Social Science Mac lab chore. Monitor cleaning chore takes place on Fridays ONLY at Rachel Carson College and Ming Ong. Monitor cleaning is performed in all the other labs (Arts, BE 109, Soc Sci, CAL) on Saturdays during the closing shift. This is because classes are not held in the labs on the weekends so consultants should have more time available to clean the monitors.

General Un-staffed Lab Procedure

Please also be aware that consultants need to perform some special duties when leaving at the end of a shift when the lab and library remains open and unstaffed. You are responsible for performing them at the end of your shift:

  • Fill printer tray(s) just below the “fill line” in the tray. We don’t want our customers to run out  of paper when the lab or the library is unstaffed!
  • Replace the toner when the printer control panel indicates that there is 2% or less toner remaining. You can check the toner level by accessing our new ‘Printer Status’ page on LTweb. Go to the corresponding lab page to check on the printer status and click on the ‘Printing’ tab. You will now see the printer status and toner level for the location you are working at.
  • Place the orange “Lab Temporarily Unstaffed” sign near the consultant station.
  • In the labs, collect any headphones that were checked out to customers.
  • Move the Handbook and any other loose Learning Technologies property to the consultant cabinet. Make sure the supply cabinet combo lock is secure!
  • Tidy up, push in chairs, etc.
  • Leave the consultant workstation ON (This way the next consultant can clock in easily and on time).
  • Announce to anyone in the lab that you are leaving and that the lab will remain open but unstaffed. Note that this is not required in the libraries.

Closing Consultants (Monday-Friday only):

Please be aware that the labs may be unstaffed when you arrive for your shift. It is important to diligently scan the lab for damaged equipment, vandalism, or missing items. If any of the above is discovered, please submit a Technical Support Request immediately. Remember to include important information such as the item, its location, and the extent of the damage.
