Homework, Games, Laptops, and Headphones
You may not, under any circumstances, read books, play games, watch movies, listen to music, or wear headphones while working. While working a shift, all consultants must use the computer at the Consultant workstation. Personal laptops are not permitted. Customers will be more likely to ask for help if a consultant does not seem preoccupied with their own personal work. Learning Technologies pays Student Consultants to help customers and be available to our customers, not to play games or look preoccupied. This policy applies to all shifts even if the lab is “slow”. When customers do not need your help, you should use the time to learn new software or clean and tidy up the lab.
You may do homework that is confined to the computer, such as reading materials on Canvas but you may NOT have materials out on the desk, such as textbooks, a printed copy of a paper, etc. Customers are far less likely to approach you if they perceive that you are absorbed in your own studies, especially if there are papers on your desk. Adherence to these policies is critical in giving our customers a superior level of service; disregard for this level of customer service is a sure way to jeopardize your employment as a Student Consultant.
You can read more about using tablets for homework at the consultant desk in the “General Assistance of Customers” page of the handbook.
