Key Server
As a University we must ensure that copyright laws are not violated. The main piece of software that helps us do this is the Key Server. Most of the programs in the labs and libraries are “keyed,” meaning a key gets checked out whenever a piece of software is opened. There are only as many keys available for checkout as there are licenses purchased for the software.
Please be aware that since most applications are keyed, if the Key Server were to fail or network connectivity is lost, it would affect all computer application availability. You will see errors when customers try to open a program saying it cannot run because of a licensing problem. If such an event occurs you should consider it an emergency and follow the Emergency Contact Procedures.
Installing applications on lab and library computers by faculty or students is not allowed for security reasons. The lab and library computers are primarily set up so students can accomplish academic related tasks, such as research, writing papers, reading email, running class related applications, etc. The goal of tech support staff is to ensure that the computers can be used reliably to accomplish these tasks. However, when possible we have added applications that students’ want and that don’t interfere with the system or other installed apps. Please submit a Tech Support Request if you or customers have suggestions for improvements for the lab and library computers, but understand that they may not accommodate some requests if there is conflict with higher priority items.
