Outside Computers on the Network
Customers are not allowed to connect outside computers (laptops) to our lab network. This is a serious security risk to our network because anyone could enter the labs and plug in a computer to do various malicious acts, since there is no authentication on a personal laptop. Customers are allowed to connect their personal laptops to Eduroam, but we do not permit customers to connect via Ethernet for the aforementioned risks.
There is one exception to this rule: Professors may connect their laptops to the lab network while they teach class. An Ethernet cable is provided at the instructor station; this is the only Ethernet cord the Professor may use.
In order to be consistent with this policy, Student Consultants should not be using personal laptops while they’re working.
Customers may use their laptops in the labs and libraries using the Eduroam Wireless Network, as long as the individual isn’t blocking any aisles or exits. Information on the campus wireless systems, including a coverage map, can be found at https://its.ucsc.edu/wireless.
