Introduction

Student Consultants are responsible for monitoring printers and printing. Printers can print in both black and white or color. Additionally, prints can be duplex (double sided) or simplex (single sided).

Cost of Printing

Black and White: 16 cents/page
Color: 40 cents/page

Printing counts pages per side, not per piece of paper (ie: 1 double sided print costs the same as 2 single sided prints)

There are no volume discounts, and prices are standardized in all the labs and libraries. Everyone prints using the print billing system, including faculty and staff. In order to offset printing costs including paper, toner, maintenance and cost of printers, Learning Technologies must charge for all printing.

Customers can only print on the 8.5 x 11 paper provided. Learning Technologies paper is the only paper to be used in the Learning Technologies printers. There are no exceptions to this rule. Other forms of paper may damage our printers and/or cause jams, delaying printing for everyone, and is not practical in a situation where many people are printing to the same printer. Once a piece of paper has run through the printer, it may not be used again because it tends to jam the laser printers.

Before filling the printer, please inspect the paper by looking at all sides of the newly unwrapped stack. If the edges of the paper stack appear damaged in any way, remove the damaged portions and recycle them. Look for crumpled or torn edges, small globs of glue, etc. Carefully place the paper in the tray so that all paper edges are aligned together. Don’t overfill the tray; look for the “fill line,” a small indented line with an arrow on the inside of the tray – and keep the paper level below that line.

If someone wants to print something on special paper, suggest that they print it on our paper and then take it to a copy machine to copy it onto their paper or take it to the UCSC Copy Center, which is located in the basement of Baskin Engineering in room 25.

Library vs UCSC accounts:

At the Libraries, there are two different ways customers can log in to the public workstations. This is important because unlike in the Learning Technologies computer labs, members of the public not affiliated with the University CAN USE and print from the library workstations.

1. UCSC Affiliates: Use their CruzID and Blue password.

When they log in, the only option they will have is to print using print billing. All support and supplies from the consultants’ perspective are handled the same way as in other computer labs.

2. Non-UCSC Affiliates: Use the generic “library” account (information is on the login screen). They must log in as follows:

User Name: library

Password: library

This allows them to use the workstations and create a printing account (if they have not done so previously) to pay for print jobs online using a credit card. They do not have immediate access to a home directory and they cannot logon and print in the labs.
