Print Billing

Printing in the labs and libraries occurs using a system called Print Billing (with the exception of Non-UCSC affiliates using the libraries). Once a customer has sent a print job from the computer it will print immediately, and the cost will be charged to their University bill. The print billing cycle can take up to a month to appear on the University Bill. For further information regarding printing at the libraries please go online to https://library.ucsc.edu/computing/printing

Instructors: We do not allow instructors or TA’s to turn off the printer(s) while teaching in the labs. If the printer is off, jobs stack up in the queue (because it is slowed). Since this slows down the queue, it sets up a situation where someone can tell the computer to print, nothing comes out (because the printer is off) and they leave. Later the printer gets turned back on and if their job is still in the queue it prints, charging them.

If an instructor requests that printing not be allowed during the class period, please inform them that instructors themselves are responsible for informing their students to not utilize the printer during the class period. To further assist, please be sure to post the appropriate ‘stop’ sign and to also be diligent in preventing outside students from entering the lab. You can always direct customers to the nearest lab/library as an alternative.

Community Patrons: Community patrons at the McHenry and Science libraries logon with a special “library” account to access the computers in the libraries. Once logged on to a library computer, they can create a printing account (if they have not done so previously) to pay for print jobs online using a credit card. Please note that community patrons cannot logon and print in the Learning Technologies labs.

Logging Out: Print billing increases the importance of customers logging out when they are done. People are responsible for all activities associated with their UCSC account. If they forget to logout and someone else prints, they will end up paying for it. Consultants should encourage customers to logout. It is important to also be proactive about finding computers that are not logged out and closing the session for them as a courtesy. When closing their session please follow the logout procedure that’s outlined in Consultant Duties and Procedures.
