Messaging Policies

ALL messages sent to Learning Technologies Staff are considered professional correspondence. Please follow these guidelines when sending Learning Technologies related messages through Slack or email:

  • You must use concise, descriptive subject lines for all Learning Technologies email. Many of us get more than 75 messages a day–unclear or vague subject lines slows down the processing of all this mail. For example “arts lab” is not an appropriate subject line, but “Unscheduled camera crew showed up at arts lab!” is. As a rule of thumb, all subject lines should be more than 3-4 words long and include a verb.
  • When you send mail to any of the mailing aliases please make sure that it is from your UCSC Google account. If you use another email program, set it up so it looks like it’s sending it from your ucsc.edu account. Do not send from gmail or other free accounts, as they tend to fill up, causing bounced messages and headaches for Learning Technologies Management. If you email the mailing aliases from another email address it is difficult to tell who actually sent the email, which is why we require it to come from your UCSC Google email address.
  • Your fellow consultants read the messages that you write, so please be respectful and use appropriate language (for example, “damn” and “hell” are NOT considered appropriate language).
  • It is also not appropriate to use the mailing aliases or Slack for political or announcement purposes except for things which directly pertain to working at Learning Technologies.
