Baskin Engineering 105 and 109
The BE 109 computer lab, located on the first floor of the Baskin Engineering Building, is equipped with 48 Windows workstations. BE109 is open 24 hours a day. Since the lab is open and unstaffed all night, it is very important for the opening consultant to diligently scan the lab for damaged equipment, vandalism, or missing items. If any of the above is discovered, please report a Tech Issue immediately . Remember to include important information such as the item, its location, and the extent of the damage. Please be as detailed as possible when describing the situation.
BE 109 has two printers, one scanner and two ceiling mounted projectors.
Since BE 109 is open 24 hours, there is an established maintenance window for system updates and modifications can be made. The ‘soft’ maintenance period is every Wednesday from 6:00am-7:30am. During this time period, lab workstations may be unavailable and users logged out if we need to perform special updates or installations. Customers who are logged in will receive warning pop up messages before being logged out. The ‘hard’ maintenance window is every Sunday between 6:30am-8:00am and all lab workstations will be unavailable during that time frame.
BE 105 is also a 24 hour lab, equipped with 40 Linux workstations and it is attached to BE 109. . The consultant on duty in BE 109 is responsible for monitoring BE 105 and performing chores as well.
There is also an ergonomic keyboard in BE109 that is attached and locked down to a computer at the end of one of the rows near the consultant station (there is a tag on top of the monitor that states this). Please assist customers that need to use this equipment.
Since BE 105 is one of the few labs that’s air-conditioned it is important to keep the front doors of 105 closed even when the lab is open. Please note that we are NOT able to adjust the temp in BE 105 and 109. Consultants just need to submit a Facilities Request if they find the computer lab temperature uncomfortable. This way Blake is notified and can alert campus HVAC of the issue. While working please keep the interior door between 105 and 109 open and periodically (every 10-20 minutes) check in on 105.
If you discover food or drink in BE 105, please ask the customer to put it away. BE 105 has had a consistent problem in regard to food and drink, so please be attentive to this lab.
You also need to ensure that BE 105 and 109 are kept neat and clean. Please check for any signs of vandalism, as these labs are open 24 hours. BE 105 has also had problems with students unplugging monitors to reserve their station or to plug in laptops or phone chargers. To alleviate this problem, we have added cable extensions sticking up from the desks that customers can use to plug in their own devices without disturbing the cable-management and already-in-use computers. If you discover a monitor that appears to be off (blank screen, no power indicator light):
- Move the mouse and an image should appear
- If nothing happens, try the power button. If the power button yields no response, check the power plug going into the bottom right side of the monitor.
- If you find the plug to be loose, plug it in and try to find and report the username by submitting a Support Request. We will send a warning email to the customer.
The BE 109 lab has two consultant cabinets: the green one by the windows (which contains extra paper), and the light-colored one near the printer (which contains all of the regular supplies).
When Closing BE 109 …
Please be aware that you will need to perform the temporarily unstaffed lab procedure when leaving at the end of a shift when the lab remains open and unstaffed, which can be found at the beginning of this section.
*Note: BE 109 has two “lab unstaffed” signs: an orange sign announcing that the lab will be temporarily unstaffed (this sign can be found in all staffed labs) and a light purple sign explaining that BE 109 will be unstaffed for the rest of the night. Be sure to use the correct sign, and be sure to put them away once their duty has been fulfilled.
