Social Sciences 1

The Social Sciences 1 computer lab, located at Social Sciences 135, is our largest lab. It has both Macintosh and Windows computers with a scanner available for both platforms and two printers.

Both labs also have ceiling mounted projectors with instructions for their use on the main projector panel near the Instructor station, so please be familiar with the operation of this equipment.

Because of the demand for special software previously only found at Porter Arts, we offer a similar setup at Social Sciences 1. Social Sciences 1 also has a number of special software packages for video, sound, and graphics editing. For a complete list of this software visit https://its.ucsc.edu/computer-labs/software.

There is also an ergonomic keyboard in Social Sciences 1 that is attached and locked down to a computer at the end of one of the rows near the consultant station on both Windows and Mac sides (there is a tag on top of the monitor that states this). Please assist users that need to use this equipment.

The most important thing to be aware of when working at Social Sciences 1 are the customers who sit on the other side of the dividing wall, the Windows side of the lab. It is easy to forget to get up and walk over there to check and see if customers need help or have food in the lab. Please make sure you get up at least every 10 minutes to scan both sides!

The Social Sciences 1 lab has a building ventilation system that provides air circulation and heated air. Therefore, it is important to keep the lab door closed even when the lab is open. If the lab temperature is too hot or cold, please submit a Facilities/Class Issue in the Support Request System.

If you come to an opening shift on the weekend and find that the building exterior doors to Social Sciences 1 are locked, you can look inside for anyone passing by to open the door for you, or you can use the emergency contact list to call the Emergency phone or one of the student managers depending upon the day and time. Be sure to submit a Support Request (see Troubleshooting and Reporting) explaining the situation and what you did to remedy the problem, once you get in. This way the Lab Operations Manager can follow up with custodial since they are responsible for unlocking the building.

Also, this lab has two consultant cabinets, side by side. The rightmost cabinet contains additional printing supplies such as paper and toner.

Please be aware that this lab also has some chores occurring more frequently than in other labs. As our most frequently used lab, the tables can become especially dirty. If you work a closing shift on Tuesdays, you will be responsible for cleaning the lab tables on the Mac and Windows side of the lab.
