Ming Ong
The Ming Ong computer lab, located at Merrill College, is equipped with 48 Windows workstations. It has two printers, a projector, a scanner, and its own bathroom. In addition, Ming Ong also contains the Student Lab Manager Office (the main Learning Technologies Staff Office is in Kerr Hall room 35). Also, please be aware that when opening the lab you will need to access the lab by entering your Omnilock code on the Omnilock that is located on the side door closest to the parking lot.
Opening/Closing Crown
If you are opening or closing Ming Ong you must also open or close Crown. Read the Crown section above for detailed procedures, which you will be held responsible for knowing. Please make yourself familiar with Crown if you have an opening and/or closing shift.
One of the main things you need to know about Ming Ong is how to get in and out. The lab has 2 sets of doors: the main glass doors in front and a smaller door on the parking lot side of the building. This side door has an Omnilock on it and is the door that consultants should use to open and exit the lab (note that there is NOT an emergency exit alarm on this door even though the sign says there is). When you are closing, lock the front glass doors then leave out the side door. Note also that unlike most labs the alarm panel is not near the door–it’s in the consultant area.
Opening Consultants: The opening consultants at Ming Ong will need to perform a few special duties since Ming Ong is unstaffed Monday-Thursday from 12pm-6pm and 12:00-3:00pm on Fridays. At the end of your shift… Please be aware that you will need to perform the temporarily unstaffed lab procedure when leaving at the end of a shift when the lab remains open and unstaffed, which can be found at the beginning of this section.
Closing Consultants: Please be aware that the Ming Ong lab will be unstaffed when you arrive for your shift. It is very important to diligently scan the lab for damaged equipment, vandalism, or missing items. If any of the above is discovered, please report a Tech Issue immediately. Remember to include important information such as the item, its location, and the extent of the damage. Please be as detailed as possible when describing the situation.
he Crown lab should be closed by the Ming Ong consultant. If you have a closing shift, walk over to Crown and do the procedure in the “Closing Crown” section.
Front Glass Doors
The front glass doors have a special hex shaped key for locking and unlocking it. The key is kept in the consultant cabinet on the shelf second to the top. Note that it is always possible to open the door from the inside by applying pressure to the crash bars. Locking the doors only stops entrance from the outside. Be sure both doors are unlocked when the lab is open and locked when the lab is closed.
To unlock the glass doors…
Put the hex key in the small hole next to the crash bars. Push on the crash bar and turn the key to the right. When the door unlocks the bar will retract into the door. Push lightly on the glass to ensure that it is unlocked.
To lock the glass doors…
Put the hex key in the small hole next to the crash bar. Apply light pressure to the crash bar and turn the key to the left. When the door locks the bar should release towards you by about an inch. To check that it is locked, push lightly on the glass (not the bar).
Because this lab is air conditioned, both sets of doors should remain closed at all times. When the lab is at an uncomfortable temperature, defined as above 72F or below 66F, consultants may adjust the temperature in the lab. When taking any action, please allow 60 minutes for the ambient temperature to equalize before trying another action. Computer lab environments are difficult to control due to several factors, including heat generated by computers, peripherals and bodies; external weather conditions; and inadequate or inefficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC).
Since the thermostat has a locking cover, the keys are labeled and stored in the consultant cabinet. Consultants may adjust the thermostat within the range of 66F-72F, or turn off the HVAC. Do not adjust the thermostat outside of this range. Please also use common sense when adjusting the temperature in the labs and try not to waste energy. Do not crank up the HVAC system while windows and doors are open. Doors and windows must be closed in order for the HVAC system to function properly. If the lab temperature does not seem to improve be sure to report a Facilities issue.
