Sub-Requests

Sub-requests are available on Slack in the #scd-openshift channel.

If you are having trouble filling a shift, message the openshifts Slack channel to alert other Consultants of the shift vacancy. Write a message offering your shift and listing the date, time, and location of your shift.

If you are able to fill someone’s shift and get more hours, reply to their request in a thread. A thread can be created by hovering over a message (tap and hold message on mobile) and clicking “reply to thread”. Some things to be aware of picking up sub-shifts:

 DO NOT:

  • Sign up for a sub shift if you already have 6 shifts.
  • Double-book yourself. Each consultant is responsible for making sure that they do not sign up for sub shifts that coincide at the same time and day.
  • Work more than 5.75 consecutive hours in one day. This is because you are required to take a mandatory 30 minute unpaid break if you work 6 hours or more and the labs are not set up to be unstaffed for a 30 minute period.

In the event that you are covering a shift for which you need opening or closing codes, please call the Management team to get the information at least one day in advance.

If you need a replacement, it is your responsibility to find one. If you cannot find a Student Consultant to cover the shift, you must work it yourself! Do not put it off until the last minute! You may send a single reminder message in the openshift channel if someone hasn’t picked up your request after 2 – 3 days.

If you have followed the steps above and are still unable to fill the shift, contact consmgr@ucsc.edu or call the Managers for additional support. Remember, you are responsible for working the shift until it has been filled. Plan ahead. You cannot simply email consmgr@ucsc.edu shortly before your shift to say you cannot make it and assume it is taken care of.
