What You Need to Know and Do for Your First Shift

We realize that you may have just been hired and are going to work your first shift without any idea what to do. Here is a list of the most important things you need to know and do for your first shift:

  • CURRENTLY N/A: If your shift is a closing shift at a computer lab, make sure you contact a Student Manager or the Lab Operations Manager through Slack to get the alarm code that you will use at the end of your shift to set the alarm for the lab. Be sure to watch the videos that demonstrate how to use the alarm panels. These videos are located here under the “Guides” tab.
  • When you speak with a Student Manager or the Lab Operations Manager, make sure you get the combo code to the cabinet to access consultant supplies in the labs and libraries.
  • Upon arriving at your shift, you should login to https://ucsclt.humanity.com in order to clock-in. and click on the ‘Clock-in Login’ link in the Quicklinks section.  The username is your UCSC email (CruzID@ucsc.edu) and your initial password is “password”. Once you have logged in, you will be able to clock in and change your password.
  • During your first shift, read the complete consultant handbook which is available online here. Pay particular attention to the section Consultant Duties and Responsibilities for your first shift because this will tell you what is expected of you while at work. Be sure to read the rest of the handbook since it contains the answers to most questions you will have, and you are accountable for the policies and information in the handbook.
  • If you have any questions that can’t be answered by the handbook you can ask the Student Managers or the Lab Operations Manager. This can be done through Slack or email. If you choose to ask through email, make sure to always Carbon Copy (“CC”) consmgr@ucsc.edu and do not email Student Managers individually. Please read the section on ‘Consultant Communication Network’ in the complete Handbook for more information.

Don’t worry! You will be trained on everything you need to know for this job very soon.
